Teaching Approach

  • Make experiential learning the centre of all teaching.
  • Make available a variety of resources for students, including magazine articles, slides from trips, online materials and documentaries, encourage role plays, and connect students with people, such as guest speakers and students from other countries.
  • Back up real-world teaching strategies with real-world assessments: incorporate slides, maps, websites and other media resources into tests and examinations.

Outstanding Achievements

  • "Rescued" outdated computer laboratory by arranging funding and overseeing the laboratory's refurbishment.
  • Overcame serious challenges to maintain school commitment to field studies in geography. Currently, field studies are hard to maintain in an atmosphere that emphasizes content-heavy curriculum along with student safety concerns and funding challenges. Ms. Carr's insistence on overcoming these challenges has contributed to the continued popularity of geography courses at the school.
  • Acts as the staff advisor and is a strong supporter of the school's environmental club: Bethune Environmental Action Team. Beginning with just five students six years ago, the club currently has 100 committed members.

Rave Reviews

"She is a teacher by profession, a leader by nature, and a nurturer at heart. She has given countless students the skills and confidence to pursue a post-secondary education, and inspired many students to enter the teaching profession. It has been a privilege to be her student. Student

"What makes Bethune's record such an exceptional achievement is that most high schools can manage a handful or a dozen keen students to take on the role of environmental leadership. Here a whole student population is being mobilized." School board official
