About the Prime Minister's Awards for Teaching Excellence
The Prime Minister's Awards for Teaching Excellence in Science, Technology and Mathematics honour educators who have had a major, proven impact on student interest and performance in these disciplines. Launched in January 1993, the program has recognized more than 300 outstanding educators to date.
The Prime Minister's Awards are offered at the local, regional and national level. Award recipients are selected in two stages by regional and national committees comprised of representatives from teacher and parent-teacher associations, provincial and territorial ministries of education, relevant post-secondary faculties, and business, labour and other groups with expertise in science, technology and mathematics teaching. The selection committees review detailed nomination packages for evidence of exemplary teaching practices, commitment and leadership, student interest and participation, student achievement and, at the secondary level, transitions.
Recipients receive cash awards that are shared with their school, and certificates signed by the Prime Minister. National-level award recipients receive their certificates from the Prime Minister at a ceremony on Parliament Hill. Regional and local-level recipients are honoured in their communities by Cabinet ministers, members of parliament, their principals, peers and students.
