Prime Minister's Awards for teaching Excellence

Letter from the Prime Minister

Coat of Arms

Every year I have the special privilege of meeting some of Canada's most outstanding teachers and presenting them with the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence.

I have always believed that, at its best, teaching is much more than a profession; it is a calling answered by special people with special qualities. As exemplified by the Award winners, our teachers go beyond the call of duty in tending to the education of Canada's young. They have shown an enthusiasm for innovation, a commitment to excellence, and an abiding concern for their students and their future place in the world.

It is my pleasure, therefore, to share with you the thoughts, ideas and practices of these special teachers. Exemplary Practices is a teacher's resource book, prepared by teachers for teachers. I hope that you will be able to apply their wisdom and experiences in your classrooms. It may well inspire you in your important work, and perhaps I will have the pleasure of presenting you with an Award next year.

Congratulations, once again, to all the 1999-2000 recipients of the Prime Minister's Awards for Teaching Excellence, and thank you for your contributions to Canada's future.
