  • Distinguished Service Citation
    • Recognizes: a teacher with a broad, extended contribution to science education in Alberta over 10 years or more. Contributions may have been in curriculum development, in service classroom teaching or leadership in a broad context.
    • Award: a large trophy and personal "keeper" trophy
    • Award presented at annual conference
  • Outstanding Science Teacher
    • Recognizes: excellence in classroom teaching in Alberta, specifically contributions to science teaching through articles, workshops, curriculum development or other forms of professional development
    • Award: a plaque

    • Recognizes: special science projects undertaken by individual teachers or groups of teachers in Alberta
    • Honoured by article describing the project which appears in The Alberta Science Teacher

Excellence in Teaching Awards Program

  • Presented by Alberta Learning and supported by the Alberta Excellence in Teaching Foundation
  • Recognizes outstanding K-12 teachers, honouring creative, innovative and effective teaching; as well recognizes school principals whose outstanding work supports outstanding teaching.
  • Local Award: in April, 131 finalists are given a certificate signed by the Minister of Learning.
  • Provincial Award: 22 teachers receive Provincial Excellence in Teaching Awards in May
  • Cash awards of varying amount to be used in teachers' schools
  • Provincial awards presented by the Minister of Learning, Xerox and other Foundation representatives at a gala ceremony in early May
  • SMARTer Kids Foundation Innovative Use of Technology Award: given to 1 recipient annually
  • APEGGA Excellence in Teaching Mathematics/Science Award: given to 1 recipient annually
  • Note: nominations require support of teacher's principal, superintendent, teaching colleague and a member of the public, plus the consent of the nominee; a school principal's nomination requires the support of a superintendent or designee

B.C. Science Teachers' Awards

  • Administered by the B.C. Teachers' Association
  • Recognizes outstanding science teachers and their contributions to the teaching of science.
  • The Award: a framed picture (may change from year to year)
  • Distinguished Service Award - for contribution to, and leadership in science activities outside the classroom.
  • Science Education Award - for successful classroom teachers who demonstrate outstanding performance in creating science teaching materials, in developing programs for the improvement of science education, or in stimulating interest in science.
  • Science Service Award - for outstanding work that contributes to the goals of Science education (individuals whose contributions are outside of the classroom are eligible for this award.)
